Award-winning Film and Video Digitization Program Comes to San Augustine, Texas Austin, Texas, September 16, 2024 – The award-winning Texas Film Round-Up , a partnership between the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) and Texas Film Commission (TFC), travels to San Augustine October 4-5. TAMI will hold an event for Texans to drop-off their Texas-related films and videotapes for their free digitization program. Participants are encouraged to pre-register at TexasArchive.org/Round-Up . The two-day event is part of a special weekend event in San Augustine with the Texas Historical Commission and the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program .
Films and video tape s can dropped off at the Augus Theatre (110 E Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas), site of the MoMS traveling exhibition “ Crossroads: Change in Rural America ,” Friday, October 4 from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A special screening featuring films and videos of San Augustine’s people and places titled “ Starring San Augustine” will be shown at the Augus Theatre at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 4. Highlights include longtime Sheriff Nathan Tindall, the search for big-eared bats in Angelina National Forest, the story of the San Augustine shootout, and a captivating cat called Ventilator.
Films and videotapes submitted to the Round-Up will be digitized at TAMI’s Austin office and returned by mail to the owners, along with a digital copy. To qualify for free digitization, the films and videotapes must be Texas-related, and participants must be willing to donate a digital copy of their materials to the program. A selection of materials from the Round-up will be incorporated into TexasArchive.org , a crowd-sourced library of Texas-related moving images. More info can be found at TexasArchive.org/Round-Up . Those who cannot attend the event can submit materials to the program via mail October 1-31.
“The films and videotapes we’ve received in past Round-Ups are truly time capsules of the Lone Star State,” says TAMI Curator Katharine Austin. “We are thrilled to help Texans digitize their media and preserve the stories captured within their films and videotapes.”
San Augustine is the first stop of the Museum on Main Street exhibition year-long tour of Texas. Several locations will feature Texas Film Round-Up drop-offs including Clifton, Brenham, Rockport, Buffalo Gap, San Elizario, and Bandera. Specific information on drop-off dates and locations will be revealed over the next year. Additional support for this program comes from the Still Water Foundation.

The Texas Film Round-Up has resulted in the digitization of more than 50,000 films and videotapes. A curated collection of more than 6,000 videos collected via the Round-Up is available to watch at TexasArchive.org. This unique program is presented by the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) and the Office of the Governor’s Texas Film Commission (TFC).
